Moritz Fürste to miss World Cup

Long-time German international Moritz Fürste is out of the Rabobank Hockey World Cup 2014 after tearing a knee ligament during training. The German men’s team are currently preparing for the June event in South Africa.

‘This is extremely disappointing for us all,’ coach Markus Weise told German sports website Sportschau. The 29-year-old had a similar injury in autumn 2011 but recovered in time to help Germany to the Olympic gold medal in London in 2012. Fürste, a midfielder, was named FIH’s 2012 player of the year.

Germany kick off their World Cup campaign in The Hague against South Africa. Their Group B match takes place on June 1 at 10.30 local time.
