The organisers of the Rabobank Hockey World Cup want to ensure the best hockey teams in the world have the best possible training facilities. As part of this, four of The Hague’s hockey clubs (HDM, HBS Craeyenhout, Klein Zwitzerland and HCR) are installing new water-based hockey pitches. These pitches will be made of the same dark green surface as the pitches in the World Cup stadiums. ‘We have opted for dark green to maximise the contrast for supporters and on television,’ said Johan Wakkie, director of the Dutch hockey association KNHB. ‘You see the ball very well.

The HBC Craeyenhout pitch is almost ready and the Dutch national squads wil have sessions here to get used to the new playing surface. Foreign teams will also be able to train here in the run-up to the tournament. Local broadcaster Omroep West had a sneak preview.
