The German women and men both start their Rabobank Hockey World Cup campaigns on Sunday June 1. ‘We are 100% motivated when it comes to the World Cup,’ says Oliver Korn, captain of Die Homanas, as the men’s team is known. ‘And we are looking forward to playing against the Netherlands.’ The women’s captain Julia Muller has set her sights on victory. ‘The last time the German women won gold at the World Cup was in 1981, so it is time to win gold again,’ she says.
Friday June 6 is a key day
Both teams have taken part in 12 previous World Cups. The women, known as Die Danas, have two gold medals to their name and the men three. The German men are currently second in the FIH rankings and won Olympic gold at the London Games in 2012. On Friday June 6, Die Homanas take on the men of Oranje, currently ranked number 3. The German women, ranked sixth in the world, meet world number two Argentina the same day. ‘Our strength is that we defend very well so it is not easy to score against us. We’ve also been attacking very well over the past couple of years, so beware of our goals,’ says Die Danas captain Muller.
