Rabobank Hockey World Cup

Australia vs Argentina – Men 13 June 2014

“Australia and Argentina went up against each other in the second semi-final of the 2014 Men’s Hockey World Cup to determine who will play Netherlands in the final. Australia got off to a flying start and scored from their first penalty corner in the 4th minute with Kieran Govers blasting home from the top of the circle. It was another penalty corner from which the 2-0 goal was scored; this time Jeremy Hayward finishing for the Kookaburras.

Jacob Whetton then scored a fantastic solo goal in the 33rd minute to send Australia up 3-0 going into the break. Australia continued their dominance in the second half and another penalty corner produced the fourth goal, this time scored by Chris Ciriello. Shortly after, Jeremy Hayward got his second goal of the game to put the Aussies 5-0 up.

Argentina pulled the score back to 5-1 in the 58th minute when Gonzalo Peillat struck a ferocious shot in from a penalty corner. However, the four goal deficit was too much to overcome and Australia sailed into the final to play the Netherlands.
