Rabobank Hockey World Cup

Japan vs South Africa – Women 13 June 2014

“Japan and South Africa did battle on Friday for 9th place at the 2014 Rabobank Women’s Hockey World Cup. The first half was fractured with South Africa closest to opening the scoring but couldn’t convert their two penalty corners and was denied by the Japanese keeper on other occasions. Just before the break, Japan hit the post from a penalty corner but the teams ended the half tied at 0-0.

South Africa finally made a penalty corner pay when Pietie Coetzee, playing her final game for her nation, scored in the 59th minute. The goal was Coetzee’s 282nd in 287 appearances. With a minute of the game left, South Africa was awarded a penalty stroke after a last ditch tackle by Japan. Dirkie Chamberlain sent the stroke through the legs of the keeper to seal a 2-0 win and 9th place for South Africa.
