“The first game of the last day of the 2014 Rabobank Men’s Hockey World Cup saw Spain take on New Zealand for 7th place. In the early stages, both teams had efforts well saved by the opposing keeper. It took until the 30th minute for the first goal: New Zealand scoring through a Kane Russell penalty corner conversion to take the 1-0 lead.
Spain equalised in the 55th minute when Blanco Lleonart bundled home a penalty corner effort that was initial saved. The Black Sticks then had a goal disallowed before the full time hooter confirmed that a shoot-out would be required to determine 7th place. Devon Manchester was the hero for New Zealand in the shoot-out and made two saves. Simon Child sealed the game for the Black Sticks by scoring the decisive effort to end the shoot-out 4-1.
