Work on building the temporary second stadium for the Rabobank Hockey World Cup 2014 is well underway. The foundations for the GreenFields Stadium are being laid and if all goes according to plan, the stadium will be officially handed over the Dutch hockey association KNHB on April 28.
The GreenFields Stadium is next to the Kyocera Stadium. It has a capacity of 5,000 including 1,000 seats on the covered stand. The stadium will host two matches a day during the pool phase of the competition, kicking off with the Australian women against South Korea on Saturday May 30 at 14.30.
The GreenFields Stadium will offer all the facilities you would expect for the top level game, including the special GreenFields turf which gave the stadium its name. In addition, there are changing rooms, showers and accommodation for officials.
Army involvement
The Hague city council has also involved the army in developing the site. The temporary stadium is being erected on part of the Kyocera Stadium car park and that means visitors will have to park further away. So the army is being drafted in to build a special pedestrian bridge between the new car park and the main Kyocera Stadium to cut down the walking distance.
